At night: Cortisol levels drop, and melatonin increases.
In the morning: Cortisol levels rise, and melatonin drops.
This is what it’s “supposed to do”. A bit like a see saw – one goes up, the other goes down and vice versa.
There are a number of reasons why higher (natural) cortisol occurs, but the three primary reasons are:
- Pain
- Inefficient bed time routines, and
- Psychological stress/Anxiety
Each of the above can increase cortisol, which effectively reduces the effectiveness of your bodies natural melatonin levels.

It’s Why Buying An Online Mattress Can Be Less Than Ideal
It’s what we see in our clinics all the time!
A very common question is “what about online mattresses”??
Well, we look at it in this way.
It’s kind of like you consulting a Physiotherapist, Chiropractor, Osteopath, Massage Therapist or Myotherapist online when you need them to do something to you.
An online consultation is just not the same is it?
And here’s why:
When you buy an online mattress:
- They don’t have someone actually look at HOW you sleep (slight problem there). They (literally) leave it up to you to decide, and “hope”.
- They (often) use cheap, environmentally unfriendly materials (If you bought one, you’d know that to get rid of the fumes, you have to air your room out for a week or more).
- They’re HOT. The majority of all people we see using an online purchased mattress complain of this issue – worse in summer (and a hot mattress does one thing. It decreases sleep quality).
- They don’t align your spine. They’re simply not designed to, even if they are “modular” you have to adjust these modules yourself.
But they’re cheaper you say!?
This is true (in a financial sense), however, there is simply no way that a (mostly) cheap foam mattress can compare to a proper depth, zoned inner-sprung mattress. Add to this, the need (and cost) for you to seek treatment that may not be necessary with other mattresses.
Cheaper? Initially maybe. But over time, not by a long shot.

Yes. This is true. Think about it though. They HAVE to do this (for marketing purposes) and HOPE that you forget about the refund. But really think about it… these products are soooo cheap to manufacture in China that they can literally give a huge amount of people refunds, because they build it into their margins as the cost to produce the product is so small in comparison to “real” locally made mattresses.
Buying A Mattress From A Store Is Better, But Can Still Be Less Than Ideal
And here’s why:
When you buy a mattress in store:
- They don’t have someone who understands pain and pathology actually look at HOW you are lying on the mattress. They’re relying on how you think you “feel” when on one of their mattresses for a minute.
- They are “hype” marketed using terms like “plush” and “regal”.
- There is often too much choice, it can be overwhelming.
- They’re often higher priced, as the showrooms have huge overheads.
- Just like the online mattresses, they don’t align your spine.
